Guest Column: Gay Racism in the Castro by Keith Boykin
In his classic poem "Tongues Untied," black gay poet Marlon Riggs reflects on his experience of moving to San Francisco decades ago. "In this great gay mecca," he writes, "I was an invisible man, still. I had no shadow, no substance. No history, no place. No reflection."

Marlon Riggs is not alone. Black gay men have complained for years about racism in the gay community, but many of these complaints have been dismissed by the larger gay community as the rantings of a few. Now comes a new report from the San Francisco Human Rights Commission that confirms what many of us have known all along: racism is alive and well, even in the legendary Castro district of San Francisco.

The report, issued last week, came after months of protests by people of color and their allies, who complained about the owner of a bar called Badlands in the Castro. I first learned about this incident back in March, when I visited San Francisco and took part in a book signing across the street from Badlands. I asked Calvin Gipson, the former president of the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Celebration Committee, Inc. and a member of a group called And Castro For All, to tell me more about the incidents at Badlands. He responded in this interview.

Tonight's meeting was definitely a good one. I am honored that I got the chance to meet some of you over the course of these past two semesters. Others I got to know some of you even better because of it and for that I am very grateful. All of you have worked hard to make SOUL the club that it has evolved into and your efforts have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I am sad that some of you are graduating this semester, but I have no doubt in my mind that you will achieve nothing short of your dreams afterwards. For those of you that have made my time as co-chair a good experience, you have my everlasting gratitude. From the drag show, to Robyn Ochs, to Jeff's Vigil and the Day of Silence along with the Rocky Horror Showing, your help has been amazing. I sincerely thank all of you for your countless hours of tabling and volunteering your time and energy into all that has been accomplished this semester. I have no doubt that the next group to take over will do an even better job than we did and each year after will surpass the previous one. This showing of growth and togetherness is part of what we as a group are about and will allow us to thrive now and in the future.

Today April 29th is the rapid HIV/AIDS testing program which will be taking place in the Student Health Center. The test takes about 20 mins and is on a first come first serve basis. The test will cover HIV along with other STDs. The times for it will be from 10a.m-3p.m. I will be there all day to guide those that wish to be tested to the appropriate room. When you stop by just talk to me (for those of you that don't know what I look like I will be the black male in the green shirt sitting by the doors) and I will direct you to the appropriate room. I will post the times for the evening portion of the testing later on in the day.

Well gang, the semester is almost over. It has a bitter sweet feeling to it, especially to those that are graduating or simply not returning for the next semester. I would like to once again thank everyone for all of their help over the semesters. Nothing could have been accomplished without all of you. We had a great time and I'm sure that future semesters will be at the very least just as successful, but most likely more. Wednesday, April 27th will be our second to last meeting. We will talk about the Rapid HIV/AIDS testing that will be taking place in the Student Health Center along with other end of the semester subjects. Also we will start looking at nominations for executive positions for the next semester. Only potential nominations will be taken this week and the next. When it comes to the actual elections those will be held next semester. Anyone can be an officer; the only stipulation is that you are an SA paying member next semester. I hope to see everyone at the next two meetings and if I don't then have an awesome summer.
